Square Dance Caller - all levels
John hails from the mountains of North Carolina, moving to Daytona Beach, Florida with his wife, Linda, in 1962.
To meet and make new friends a neighbor invited them to join a square dance class.
The instructor had an amateur night and being a natural singer John had no trouble being on stage and pleasing the audience.
In the fall of 1963 John taught his first beginner class, joined the Florida Callers Association and the rest is history.
Traveling and calling extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and the far East has brought him and his family
many wonderful and memorable friendships with dancers and callers around the square dance world.
John established a monthly Callers Note Service which supplied callers around the world with educational information
on calls and teaching from 1993 to 2006. The service had over 500 subscribers when square dancing was at its peak. He has been a
member of the Florida Callers Association for 47 years, and he has served as secretary, vice-president, and president of the FCA. He has
been a Callerlab member and Caller Coach and is now a member of The American Callers Association where he is a caller advisor.
He has attended, called, and conducted clinics at 16 National Conventions. He has also been the featured clinician at four of
the Florida Callers Association Fall Clinics. John and Linda were inducted into the Florida Hall of Fame in 2002. John was one
of the originators of one of the most popular square dance weekends on the East Coast, “The Florida Sunshine Festival,” which
lasted for 30 years, and he is now on the staff of the @ldquo;Florida Winter Festival” in its 4th year. He has been on staff at one time or
another at many major weekends around the US and he has taken dancers to all the major countries in Europe to enjoy dancing and
calling with callers around the globe. One of the most memorable trips was calling in Beijing, China. In China 200 Chinese dancers
enjoyed an afternoon of dancing with dancers from the US at the Great Wall. John has numerous recordings on Kalox,
McGregor, Blue Star and Brahma record labels and he appeared on one of the “Sets In Order” albums.
John’s wife, Linda, has been a major supporter throughout his calling career. They have 5 great children and 15 even greater
grandchildren who keep them busy and are the highlights of their lives.
John and Linda will never retire from the friendships they have made through dancing; as dancers everywhere know Square Dancing
is an Expression of Happiness. John’s style of calling is renowned as smooth, enjoyable and interesting for the dancers.
John would like to be remembered as a caller who gave his very best at every dance.
